Happiness
On that summer day,
as the rain began to fall
I suddenly felt my soul
lift and soar and fly
and running out the door
into air, lightning-charged,
drenched, cleansed, thundering
my senses rose and rose.
Riding, pedaling rapidly,
no idea of where I was going
yet a destination somehow in mind.
Reaching the tree, dropping the bike,
a weird sense of urgency, when
logically there shouldn't be there was.
Laying in the branches,
staring at the sky,
watching lightning flickacrizzle ,
hearing thunder rumble by.
Feeling raindrops, pouring
I laugh and stare into the sky
fixed, entranced forever by
that mighty, clashing storm.
Then on my bike I ride
faster, maybe, than the speed of light
stretching out my arms to fly,
I'm an eagle soaring through the sky.
Lifted by rising euphoric tide,
only rising higher and higher
only rising in my mind.
Maybe people driving safe in cars,
look out, only to see, me;
arms like wings, laughing,
face to the sky, drenched and soaking wet.
And i wonder if they say,
amongst themselves,
"Is she crazy? What is she doing,
riding, laughing in pouring rain?"
And I wonder if they'll ever know,
how wonderful it is to be seized
by a burst, a breeze, a beam
of joy so strong, so swift,
you can fly in the clouds
and still, you feet will be
on the ground, grounded, maybe.
a burst brought by
an autumn's breeze or changing leaves
or burst of sun, golden-bright
or sudden painting of the sky
or that slow creeping of still dusk
or tens of hawks circling 'round you
or million flowers in a field
or someone there, with you
someone you hold dear.
a sudden burst of laughter
a sudden dance of joy.
